Character Design as seen through Destiny's Child, I GOT INTO COMIC SCHOOL, bakatako, and comic updates

how boxes are going also (not well)

Okay so august sucked but summer always sucks. So art progress has been slow but coming along. I am trying to make it so that I give myself time to work on my comic during the week but I'm usually also doing work stuff during the week and like I've been away most weekends this August. I have started doing a Korean class on character design and BOY WHEN I TELL YOU IT BEAT MY ASS. it also fucked up sleep schedule.

It had us focus on literally how draw from the line up!!!! they really skewered us so hard. Each class even has little PSD files and this is how I struggle with lines... just like how learning boxes made me realize I struggle with lines.

The artist, spoke to us about the importance of making many drawings, and drawing everyday. Unfortunately, I had art block so this was very hard for me. The class came with some templates and shapes though talking about how to break down shapes into character design

But it made me realize something the other day................... the best example of character design I've ever seen is that Destiny's Child video

You in the class they explained that shapes not only inform personality but textures.... in the video you see "urban" Destiny's Child vs "bougie" Destiny's Child - this is character design through outfit that assists the video as they are dance battling themselves.

In the bougie purple outfits they emphasize structure and frill as well as being conservative, covering up most parts of the body! The more "urban" outfits however feature brighter/ differentiating colors and show much more skin or are skin-tight with less uniformity overall.... that's character design

The final outfits however - unite these concepts with a single texture and palette change. Browns and furs - furs indicate luxury, while the browns are neutral colors.... they still vary but the colors are more unified and the outfits still show skin... ultimately these win the dance battle - signalling peace......

Storytelling.... through outfit....

I got into comic school!

I recently got a big scholarship for comicsworkshop.bsky.social 's year long graphic novel class. Which is pretty cool - I'm hoping this will make me better and faster at pages. I'm trying to figure out a good schedule for myself.

I'm working on another page I swear! it's just been a hard summer, I get summer seasonal depression and I've been flying and zooming across the country directing shoots and going to silicon valley and going weddings and triggering my PTSD!

Bakatako

I found out about this super cute website called bakatako where it gives daily prompts for you to doodle and it's really fun. The editor is really really nice for an online program and people even do animation on it and it auto-makes little timelapse videos....

I'm addicted to watching my own process like a digital illustration narcissus....

THAT actually broke my art block.

Unfortunately, I have a new issue since last weekend I broke my glasses and while I await my new ones the boxes I've been drawing have been pretty bad since I am now lacking in proper depth perception since I am using outdated glasses. It's kind of a pain in the ass. :(

Instead I've been writing and doing some story stuff in the meantime - it's hard because I want to make sure that I can do this - but I probably won't be able to get new glasses until next week at the earliest.
